RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA: King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) is currently carrying out quality projects in the four Syrian governorates of Daraa, Homs, Hama and Aleppo at a total cost of USD $4 million to support 9,000 families – a total of more than 50,000 beneficiaries.

Through these projects, KSrelief seeks to develop humanitarian work policies aimed at transferring beneficiaries from dependency on assistance to self-reliance, enabling people to return to the labor market via various development projects throughout Syria. The center is working towards the economic empowerment of families most in need, with the goal of extending the impact of its projects to train beneficiaries and build their capacities. Through this strategy, participants will be able to achieve self-sufficiency following the completion of the first project cycle, which is supervised directly by the center.

The project includes agricultural activities which target the neediest families, as well as IDPs with previous agricultural experience; it provides such agricultural inputs as seeds, fertilizers and pesticides for the winter and summer planting seasons. Also included are components to raise the technical capabilities of beneficiaries in the Hama, Aleppo and Homs by training them in various agricultural activities.

The project also includes livestock breeding activities targeting people with previous experience in raising livestock. The project will provide sheep and cattle, and will support the provision of animal feed, veterinary care and animal vaccinations during the project implementation period. The project will also provide instruction in the proper care of livestock through technical training by livestock specialists in Aleppo and Daraa.

The project aims to contribute to improving food security by providing livelihood support through increasing agricultural production, protecting productive assets, restoring or establishing income-generating activities to prevent negative adaptation mechanisms, and distributing necessary fertilizers. The beneficiaries were supported with NPK fertilizer (15 kg per dunum) to meet wheat crop requirements throughout all stages of growth. Also included are pesticides, adequate distribution of irrigation resources to beneficiaries through a financial voucher system for resident and displaced families, and technical training for farmers to increase their knowledge of growing vegetable crops according to accepted agricultural practices.
